"So how was the wedding?" was the popular question at church today.
"Good," I said, qualifying that with "Nat and I are really tired."
Poor baby Natalie. She and I came home earlier than the rest of the family so we could work in the nursery this morning. We were both exhausted and a little sun-roasted, like July tomatoes. But Natalie came through like a trooper. As we walked out into the hot sunshine after church (and a VBS meeting neither of us had expected), I commented to Nat that at least neither of us was getting married today. "Or yesterday," she sighed. True that. One sister getting married yesterday was plenty!
It was a toasty time at the farm as we prepared for the ceremony yesterday morning. God started up the air conditioning around noon, and we had a nice breeze that came and went throughout the afternoon.
The bride and groom beamed through much of it; the bride gave her happy husband a tissue during the sermon -- not for tears, but for the sweat dripping off of his forehead.
Both of them are pretty attractive, and they make a good-looking couple... but I'm not sure if it was a beautiful wedding or not, since I was standing up front -- not the best seat in the house, but not the warmest either -- and I was OK with that. The pictures will be telling: groomsmen in heavy tunics, bridesmaids in full-length dresses, everyone with literally shining faces...
The reception was held in a more enclosed area, which actually helped everyone stay cool. The bridesmaids and I got out of our "princess dresses" and into more summery wedding-wear. Then the kids and the young at heart went down by the river for the zip line, sand box, and other fun.
Every time something went wrong or I felt the pressure of the day, I reminded myself, at least we got them married. Now all they need to do is stay that way. No more pressure! At least on me. ;)
"I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
to sprout up before all the nations."
~ Isaiah 61
