Treating God as God

8/18/12
A few thoughts on...

Hosea 14:3
       We will never again say
       'Our gods' to what our
       hands have made, for in
       you the fatherless find compassion.

'Our gods' our hands have made - what I spend time with; creative time, relationship-building, loving time. What I invest my life in.
Turning in times of pain & distress to these things. Seeking advice or comfort when confused, love when I'm needy, direction when I'm aimless. Sacrificing for these things.

In you - dwelling, remaining in His essence, His nature.
Deep within Him lies compassion. He is filled with it, so it's not hard to find.

fatherless - no one to protect you
no one to aid, abet, reassure you
no one to  recognize you as who you are
no one to give you context for your life experiences and help you overcome

compassion - tender loving care.
"healing waywardness and loving freely" - v.4
"receiving graciously" - v.2
"answering and caring" - v.8
Giving me what I need, even though I don't deserve it.
"Giving generously to all & upbraiding not" - James 1:8

"Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious & compassionate, slow to anger & abounding in love..." - Joel 2:13

3/25/12
Flashback to a sermon from a country pastor, "The Certainty of Our Future, Through Faith."

Hebrews 11:1-3

* What gives you the right to say NO to God? -- or lose your focus on Him? Jesus began and will finish your faith.

* In Greek, faith denotes security, certainty -- commitment, substance, assurance, rock-solid trust.

* We have the faith to see what is not visible to others. If anyone should be living with an eternal view, it is us!

My conclusions:

God keeps letting me back when I lose my focus on Him. His compassion draws me to Him again and again. But how much better life would be if I consistently kept my gaze where it belongs: on the Author and Finisher of my faith.
